ICA is pleased to present an edition of 28 lithograph prints created by Paulo Nazareth during his journey across Africa, to accompany the exhibition Journal held at the ICA (25 June – 14 September 2014).

Throughout his practice, Paulo Nazareth actively participates and comments on race, ideological and social issues that rise alongside his continuous journeys in Americas and recently in Africa. He employs language, actions and objects that often use simple but strong gestures to evoke historical memory as well as to highlight social and economic tensions and class struggle.

In this edition, the mandala depicts a diagram of a ship deck full of slave bodies. Nazareth’s works frequently establish or reveal the bonds that exist between people and their surroundings, individual and collective life.

Born in 1977 in Brazil, Paulo Nazareth lives and works in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In 2012, he was awarded the ‘MASP de Artes Visuais’ – Mercedes-Benz Award in Sao Paulo, BR. Recent solo exhibitions include: Genocide in Americas, Meyer Riegger, Berlin, DE(2015), Banderas Rotas, Galleria Franco Noero, Torino, IT (2014), Che Cherera, Mendes Wood DM, São Paulo, BR (2014), Journal, Institute for Contemporary Arts, London (2014), UK, Veneza Neves, Veneza, Ribeirão das Neves, BR (2013),and Premium Bananas, Museu de Arte de São Paulo - MASP, São Paulo, BR (2012-2013).
