Produced to accompany the exhibition Wot No Bike (21 January - 6 February 2015). In this exhibition, Paul Simonon - artist, musician, and avid biker – displayed a series of paintings based on his personal effects, such as his bike helmet, boots, and keys. Inspired by 20th century movements such as the 1950s British Kitchen Sink School, Simonon’s depiction of the ordinary and banal is expressive of working class struggles and consequent emerging sub-cultures and counter-cultures during post-war austerity.
Born in 1955, Simonon works and lives in London. After taking up a scholarship at the Byam Shaw School of Art (now part of Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design), Simonon went to form iconic band The Clash along with Mick Jones and Joe Strummer.
